Infrastructure
Former Arboleas train stop
This infrastructure represents one of the hubs that formed part of the extensive railway network of the Almanzora Valley. It is an old halt that provided railway services to the town of Arboleas, located just two kilometres away. Today, it is in a good state of conservation, and its surroundings have witnessed the urban development of the town.
The building, built in masonry, was inaugurated at the end of 1894, along with other structures that made up the Almanzora Railway. It has two storeys and is covered by a gabled roof. There are several openings along both storeys and, on one of its façades, there is a ceramic sign with the name of the town served by this halt.
The Great Southern of Spain Railway Company Limited (GSSR) was responsible for the construction of this building. This station was part of the railway line that, for a century, between 1885 and 1985, linked the provinces of Granada, Almería and Murcia. This historical connection boosted the trade in minerals and marble, as well as passenger transport in the south-east of the peninsula.
From 1985, railway traffic was interrupted in the section between the town of Guadix in Granada and Almendricos, in the municipality of Lorca (Murcia), due to economic reasons. However, the Guadix-Granada and Almendricos-Murcia sections, including the branch to Aguilas, remain in operation. This decision negatively affected trade and communications in the Almanzora Valley region, disconnecting the Levante region from the south of the country and leaving a significant infrastructure in disuse.
