Viaduct over road A-349

This restored infrastructure carefully recreates the majesty of the original viaduct. It is an iconic bridge, built in a combination of masonry and iron beams, reflecting the railway architecture of late 19th and early 20th century Europe.

The design features triangular formations with acute angles, a distinctive feature of railway constructions of the time. This structure evokes the grandeur of other emblematic buildings in the region, such as the Cable Inglés in Almería city and the historic Hornillo ore freighter in Águilas, which were also part of the same railway line.

The Great Southern of Spain Railway Company Limited (GSSR) was the British company responsible for bringing this entire railway network to life. Its role was crucial in the construction and operation of this infrastructure which connected the provinces of Granada, Almería and Murcia for a century, from 1885 to 1985. However, in the last year, due to economic reasons, an important decision was taken to interrupt rail traffic on the section between Guadix and Almendricos, in Lorca (Murcia).

This decision had significant consequences for the region, negatively affecting trade and communications by disconnecting the Levante area from the south of the country. In addition, an infrastructure that had been of critical importance was left in disuse. The restoration of this structure is not only a tribute to the rich railway history of the region, but also an opportunity to preserve and share the legacy of a connection that was fundamental to the development of this land.
