Old Olula-Fines Station

This station is located between the Almeria towns of Olula del Río and Fines. During the period of activity of the Almanzora Valley railway in this area, it was particularly important, especially for the transport of marble from the town of Macael.

The old Olula-Fines train station is an infrastructure located between the municipalities of Olula del Río and Fines, in Almería. During the golden age of the Almanzora Valley railway, this location played a crucial role, especially when it came to the transport of marble from the town of Macael.

Macael, a small municipality nestled near the imposing Los Filabres mountain range, has built up a rich tradition of marble quarrying over the centuries. The earliest excavations date back to ancient times, and this material has been an essential pillar in the social and economic development of the region, affectionately nicknamed "white gold". Interestingly, fragments of this marble have travelled as far as Extremadura, decorating emblematic places such as the theatre of Mérida.

Against this backdrop, the railway station became the economic epicentre at the end of the 19th century. The train played a key role in enabling the commercial expansion of the Macael marble throughout Spain. However, with the closure of this railway line, the station was forgotten and abandoned to its fate.

Today, the remains of this old infrastructure are abandoned, although a passenger building, a warehouse with a loading bay, a crane and a weighbridge still remain, silent witnesses of a bustling past. In addition, this enclosure also houses a water tank and dispenser, which give an idea of the important passenger and goods traffic that once served this station, which is now in ruins.
