Rambla de la Hortichuela Viaduct
The Rambla de la Hortichuela viaduct is a structure made up of a span built in masonry that joins the banks of this small watercourse, complemented with iron beams.
The metal structure is composed of iron beams that exhibit geometric patterns characteristic of late 19th and early 20th century railway constructions in Europe.
It began operating in 1894 as part of the Almendricos-Baza section, a railway infrastructure that connected the provinces of Granada, Almería and Murcia for a century, from 1885 to 1985, when the railway traffic was interrupted between Guadix and Almendricos, in Lorca (Murcia), due to economic reasons.
The Rambla de la Hortichuela is a watercourse that comes from an old irrigation channel, heir to one of the few irrigation systems of Western Almería. Its name refers to the small vegetable gardens that were once found in these areas, where legumes, vegetables and fruit trees were grown together.
