Old Almanzora station
According to local newspapers, the inauguration of the Almanzora station took place in November 1893, coinciding with the start-up of the railway section between Zurgena and Almanzora, which was integrated into the Almanzora Railway. The building, built in masonry, was erected alongside other structures in the Marble area.
The company in charge of the construction of both this station and the entire railway line was the British company The Great Southern of Spain Railway Company Limited (GSSR), as part of a historic connection that linked the provinces of Granada, Almería and Murcia for a century, from 1885 to 1985. This historical connection boosted the trade in minerals and marble, as well as passenger transport in the south-east of the peninsula.
The name of the station generated some controversy, as it was designated as "Almanzora Station", but it coincided with the name of another station in Castellón (Valencian Community). Because of this, in 1904 it was changed to "Albox-Almanzora Station". Later, in a new modification in 1915, its name was simplified to "Albox Station", considering that the town of Albox had no direct railway service and this station was the nearest one.
From 1985, railway traffic was interrupted on the section between Guadix and Almendricos, in Lorca (Murcia), due to economic reasons. However, the Guadix-Granada and Almendricos-Murcia sections, including the branch to Aguilas, remain in operation. This decision negatively affected trade and communications in the Almanzora Valley, disconnecting the Levante region from the south of the country and leaving a significant infrastructure in disuse.
Nowadays, Almanzora is part of the Municipal District of Cantoria, and the town council has carried out the refurbishment of the station's facilities. This has become a hub for the locality, housing a social hall, a public service office, a petanque court and a bar, providing a space for rest and recreation before continuing the Trail.
