Bridge over the river Ridaura
The carrilet (narrow-gauge railway), which began its journey in 1892, was the first Spanish railway to have a 75-centimetre gauge. The "Feliuet", as it was affectionately called in the territory, used to transport cork to processing facilities along its route. With the passage of time and the gradual loss of traffic, the line passed over to state ownership in 1963. Despite efforts to keep the line open, in 1969 it was closed and dismantled.
From the beginning, the train route was designed to avoid costly works, so no tunnels were ever built and of the nine bridges built, only five are of any meaningful length – one such that concerns us here.
The bridge over the river Ridaura is located at km 35.021. It was built by the engineer Alexandre Wolguemuth and at the time had a budget of 19,500 pesetas. It spans 40 metres and has three supporting pillars, which can be seen from the riverbanks.
According to historians, in November 1908, due to a strong flood, the central pillar sank lower into the river. Years later, in 1913, the bridge would be rebuilt, and it was made with a single 40-meter span manufactured by the company La Maquinista Terrestre y Marítima, and designed by the engineer August de Rull.
It is currently part of the Girona-Sant Feliu de Guíxols Carrilet Greenway and is commonly used by hikers and cyclists along the way.
