Old Railway Bridge
The history of the railway from Sant Feliu de Guíxols to Girona dates back to 1887, when Joan Casas i Arxer and Enric Heriz i Campanaria published the specifications in a report. Two years later, after the establishment of the Compañía Anónima del Ferrocarril de Sant Feliu de Guíxols a Girona, the works began.
The rolling stock consisted of 4 steam locomotives, 15 passenger cars, 4 boxcars and 63 freight wagons, although later another locomotive, 2 more boxcars and another 15 wagons would be ordered.
In early August 1891, the first test trip began and, a year later, service began along the 39.7 km railway line. Little by little, freight traffic increased, reaching 52,114 tons in 1927. The railway saw a resurgence after the Civil Car, reaching 508,306 passengers in 1946.
Despite these numbers, the company suffered from a lack of liquidity, which forced it to request government subsidies on several occasions. The funds were used to modernise the infrastructure, but despite this effort, the line had to close in 1969, mainly due to the rise of road transport.
The Carrilet had a total of nine bridges. The one which crosses the seasonal stream Salenys was designed by an engineer Bermat Puig of the Compañía Anónima del Ferrocarril de San Feliu de Guíxols a Girona. It spans 25 metres and its three large semi-circular stone arches, each 7 meters high, stand out. At that time its construction cost 12,000 pesetas.
Nowadays, the bridge is open to cyclists and hikers, a metal handrail having been installed to assist the latter. After crossing the Salenys, the railway path leads to an open area of trees and fields.
