Old Railway Bridge
The Carrilet was a narrow-gauge train that linked Sant Feliu de Guíxols with Girona. It was inaugurated in 1892 and was in operation as a passenger and freight line until 1969.
The project was promoted by several businessmen from Sant Feliu and Baix Empordà, mainly from the cork industry, who needed a means of transport for their goods.
Subsequently, tourism on the Costa Brava became more important at which time passenger transport began to grow enormously. Most of them used the Carrilet to travel to La Font Picant, where they enjoyed the spa and the beaches of San Pol and Playa de Aro.
The golden age of this railway lasted from 1918 until the depression of 1929. The lack of resources, the wear and tear of the infrastructure and rolling stock, as well as the growth of road transport, led to its definitive closure in 1969.
At Km 16.256 is the bridge over the Verneda stream. At the time, it cost 8,600 pesetas to construct and, like the rest of the bridges on this line, it was built by the engineer Alexandre Wolguemuth of the Civil Arsenal of Barcelona.
Its span is 20 metres and consists of a metal deck with full-bore girders, supported on the abutments and a central pillar, also made of metal. During the Civil War, it was blown up by the Republicans in 1939 during their escape.
At the end of the war, reconstruction work began. What was a simple work that was going to be finished in a few days took almost a year, due to the rising inflation the country was suffering from. During that time, travellers had to get off the train, cross the river on a temporary footbridge and board another train that was waiting for them on the opposite bank. During the reconstruction, three concrete pillars were added.
