Old Railway Bridge
This old railway bridge is located between km 0 and km 6 of the old Sant Feliu de Guíxols railway line, which is known as the carrilet. For decades, many people from the Girona area used this means of transport to go the popular beaches of Sant Feliu.
In those days, there were a great number of narrow-gauge railways (carrilets) in the province of Girona. They departed from the capital to different towns such as Olot, Banyoles, Palamós and Sant Feliu. Perhaps Carrilets’ glory days were during the post-war period, since road transport was difficult and they were used both for the transport of people and goods, including cork sheets and stoppers, since there were large factories in Llagostera and Cassà de la Selva.
In 1963, the Carrilet became state-owned and, although the intention was to develop it further, in 1969 the entire Girona network was closed and finally dismantled. Despite this, some of its infrastructure still remains, such as this bridge on the banks of the Onyar River, which was built to serve a flour factory that was located at km 1.5 of the railway, in the Creueta neighbourhood.
As with so many other parts of the Carrilet, this metal bridge whose pillars are strongly anchored in reinforced concrete foundations, was earmarked for demolition following the closure of the railway, however, the presence of the nature trail was its salvation, and it is now used as a walkway for hikers and cyclists.
