Old Station at Castell d'Aro

The stations belonging to the Sant Feliu de Guíxols to Girona railway, inaugurated in 1892, had the same architectural approach, giving them a certain coherence despite being different buildings. In addition, costly works were avoided at all times, since the budget was limited. This resulted in the railway not having any tunnels and only nine bridges – only five of which of any meaningful length.

The Castell d'Aro station was a third category station, located at kilometre 34.224. It was made of stone masonry with a gable roof covered with flat tiles. The interior consisted of a waiting room, ticket office and the stationmaster's living quarters. Next to it, there was a toilet building with a hipped roof and, near the stream, a track and works shed.

It had four stationmasters who were relieved every 19 years, with the exception of the first one who served for 31 years. The main challenge they faced was dealing with the annexed level crossing that was guarded with two barriers provided with wheels, the same as the one in Santa Cristina.

Nowadays, the station is very well preserved since the city council reconditioned it as a municipal facility. Today it houses a circuit for 5.5 inch trains and is the base for the Associació del trenet de la Vall d'Aro. As such it has become a place of pilgrimage for train enthusiasts.

It is worth mentioning that the Associació del trenet de la Vall d'Aro has restored locomotive number 5, which is located in the station park together with the chassis of a wooden carriage.
