Old Station at Llagostera

In 1892, the railway that linked the city of Sant Feliu de Guíxols with the city of Girona began its journey. This project was promoted by Joan Cases and Enric Heriz with the aim of connecting the port with the surroundings of Girona in a more efficient way. The route of the so-called Carrilet passed through different towns in Baix Empordà and Gironès. One of them was Llagostera.

The construction of this station meant great economic development for this municipality, as it became part of a new railway network that vastly reduced transport times.

The station main building was built in masonry with a hipped roof covered with flat tiles, very similar to the one in Cassà de la Selva. The interior had a waiting room, ticket office and the stationmaster's office. There was also a dwelling, consisting of a hall, dining room-kitchen, three rooms and a toilet.

Next door, the public restrooms with a hipped roof can still be seen. Completing the facilities is a square well with a depth of 4 metres and with an adjoining washhouse, a brick track building and a gable roof.

In Llagostera the locomotives would fill up with water, using a tank made of exposed brick that was located on the opposite side of the dock. In addition, it had a small platform that was used to load wagons on a perpendicular track from the flourmill.

Nowadays, there is a large park through which the Gotarra stream passes, the route of the old Carrilet following parallel to it. The station is in excellent condition in that it still maintains much of the original features such as doors, windows and the wooden partition walls of the restrooms.
