Santo Cristo de la Herrera hermitage
The Santo Cristo de la Herrera hermitage was commissioned in the 18th century in the municipality of Ojos Negros by the bishop of Tarragona Bernardo Mateo, a native of the area. For many years it was a place of devotion for many nearby villages, being in the medieval uninhabited village of Ferrera, which has been abandoned since the late 14th century.
The temple, which was built near an old hermitage in the uninhabited village of Herrera, consists of a single nave divided into three bays of unequal length. There is a barrel vault that covers the crossing and, furthermore, the part of the entrance atrium features a semicircular arch.
Keen observers will notice a stone at the entrance to the path leading to the religious building which bears an engraving by the local sculptor, Kpis, which reads “Restored by those who venerate you. Ojos Negros Teruel 1993″.
Residents of both Ojos Negros and Pozuel del Campo attend it. The former go on the day of the Holy Cross, in May, carrying the saint throughout the village to bless the fields and its inhabitants, while the pilgrimage from Pozuel del Campo is made forty days later after Lent.
Various legends are told about the hermitage, such as the one that tells of the disappearance of the village of Ferreras, after a storm that completely destroyed it as a divine punishment for acting as a refuge for evildoers and bandits, thus the Christ of the Band appears as the protector of the good people.
