La Caridad archaelogical site
La Caridad is an urban archaeological site belonging to the Roman Republican period, which existed from about the 2nd to the 1st centuries BC. It is in the municipality of Caminreal, in the province of Teruel, and has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Government of Aragon.
The settlement was discovered in 1977 by a team from the Museum of Teruel. Excavations began in 1984 and research and restoration work is still underway.
The settlement is on the outskirts of the village, occupying a slightly elevated platform overlooking the River Jiloca and covering a total of 12.5 ha, which is much higher than the usual Iberian-period sites discovered in the district, pointing to the semi-urban nature of the settlement.
All research appears to indicate that it was a Celtiberian settlement undergoing Romanisation which was destroyed due to the Sertorian Wars, which were fought between 82 BC and 72 BC. The caused its inhabitants to leave for the neighbouring San Esteban Hill, in the village of El Poyo del Cid, where they founded a new town.
The name the city may have borne in unknown, although by comparing and contrasting various ancient sources, it is believed that it may have been Leonica, the name it was given due to its being inhabited by Leonicians, a Celtiberian people from the area. The city was within the route of old Roman road that connected the towns of Saguntum (today Sagunto) and Bilbilis (now Calatayud).
The ruins of square-shaped dwellings have been found at the site, usually laid out around a central courtyard with arcades, around which the rooms were arranged. The ruins unearthed from one of the dwellings also stand out: there an Iberian inscription was found on a Roman mosaic made with white tesserae.
