Old Fuentes Claras mill
The Fuentes Claras Mill is a hydraulic construction in the municipality bearing the same name, in the province of Teruel.
This facility is on the banks of the River Jiloca, in the Molinar or mill irrigation channel, a diversion of the Jiloca which, running from the municipality of Caminreal, supplied the flour mill with power.
It is estimated that it dates from prior to 1555. When it was used as a flour mill, it was leased to various professional millers until, in the 20th century, it was changed, exploiting the waterfall it had, into a small electrical plant that supplied electricity to the Bello flour mill. This continued until the 1980s, when it fell into disuse.
This is a mill of the contrabalsa type, which was built in masonry and brick. Thus, the water was channelled through the irrigation channel and then stored in a reservoir, where it could be used. This mill required a large volume of water to function, since it had four hollows that could hold a couple of pairs of millstones. This was quite new in the area and, besides this mill, there was only one similar mill in Calamocha.
The water flowed over a wheel that was connected to the upper stone, also called a volandera. On this stone was the so-called drum, a wooden device covering it and allowing the flour to be collected such that it could be directed towards a single outlet to fill the sacks. Immediately above the drum there was once a hopper responsible for supplying the stones with grain through regulatable device.
The mill also has an annexed dwelling accessible through the entrance porch.
Today, the building preserves the original machinery of both the mill and the electrical power plant.
