Virgen de los Navarros hermitage

Located in the municipality of Fuentes Claras, it is a solid masonry building dating to the 17^th century. It has a single nave covered with a half-barrel vault with lunettes. Its façade has a semicircular brick arch under a line of angled bricks, all topped by a ceramic image of the Virgin.

Venerated in Fuentes Claras, it was once known as de la Fuente after the fountain that waters the sanctuary’s vegetable garden. Its change of name to Virgen de los Navarros commemorates some events that happened to some Navarrese who got into a brawl on their way to Valencia, before being wounded and helped by the Virgin, who soon restored their health. They therefore donated great quantities of alms to the sanctuary.

Another version maintains that some Navarrese people stole the Virgin from the hermitage and fled, and when they had got some distance away they stopped to rest and realised that the image had miraculously disappeared, and was found again inside the hermitage.

The festival in honour of the Virgen de los Navarros is held in the village in September. In the morning, a pilgrimage to the hermitage is held in which the image of the Virgin is carried in procession from the village church with flags and banners. Once there, a mass is sung, the Virgin is removed and they go around the hermitage singing the Hail Mary.
