San Esteban hermitage
San Esteban hermitage is on the summit of the hill bearing the same name, in the village of El Poyo del Cid. It was built in the late 18th century and is dedicated to San Esteban the Protomartyr, one of the first Christian martyrs, who was stoned to death around the year 34.
The hill on which it stands is one of the most iconic places in the area, for two reasons. The first is that this is where the Cid Campeador set up his headquarters before embarking on his rides through the River Martín valley. Secondly, because from this point one can also enjoy the best views of the banks of the River Jiloca and the many nearby municipalities.
The building in question is a rural building with a rectangular floor plan and a gabled roof. The lintelled doorway on one of its sides is especially noteworthy; it has a small portico attached to it.
In 1993 it had to be restored, since, as it was in a semi-ruined stated and all its imagery had been stolen, and the path giving access to it was also prepared. Since it was restored, he tradition of going on pilgrimages has been revived. This takes place on the first Sunday in June each year; upon reaching the hermitage, the pilgrims hear mass, before having a brotherhood meal shared by all the groups and residents of the village.
The restoration work also encompassed the creation of a new image in honour of the patron saint because the original had disappeared; the person responsible for this work was Luis Abad, a self-taught local artist.
