Ojos Negros windmill
This windmill is a structure on the outskirts of the village, between the centre of the village of Ojos Negros and the neighbourhoods of Sierra Menera, on San Gregorio hill (Teruel).
It is a Mediterranean-type model (category C in the classification produced by the German F. Krüger) and was typical of the 16th and 17th centuries. This building is characterised by its cylindrical tower, which is crowned by a conical roof frame generally made of light materials such as straw, reeds, wood or zinc.
This movable roof rotates around the axis of the mill using an external element known as a “steering stick.” A large wooden pole, which starts from the friar, following the roof to the ground, protruding diagonally from the body of the mill.
The interior of this building is divided into three rooms: the ground floor, known as the stable, which was used to store the grain and bag the flour. The middle floor, or camareta, which was used to sift the flour and store linen, ropes and other elements that were essential for the mill’s activity. And finally, the top floor, also known as the milling room, where the grain was ground.
In the latter room, there is a series of small windows surrounding the mill, whose purpose was to allow the miller to see the wind direction so as to direct its rectangular blades.
In short, this windmill is a clear example of the industrial flour-milling heritage of the District of Jiloca, and it can be visited as part of the circular path connecting Ojos Negros with Sierra Menera, the PR-TE 52 path.
