Sauquillo de Alcázar
Sauquillo de Alcázar is a small village, today practically uninhabited, located on the slopes of the Sierra del Costanazo, close to Torrubia de Soria.
According to some experts, the name is derived from the Latin word for the elder shrub that is common in this area. Despite this, other theories relate the name of the village to Basque or Mozarabic. There seems to be no doubt that Alcázar refers to the fortification located here.
This old castle, of which only the remains of some masonry walls remain, was located very close to the centre of the village, next to the Church of San Andrés, the patron saint of the village.
In the past, the village’s economy, like in most of the municipalities of Soria, was heavily dependent on agriculture, with cereal, sunflower and flax the most abundant crops in the area.
Despite the fact that most of the houses in Sauquillo are in ruins, the village is included on the popular Routes of the Towers and the Castles of the Lands of Agreda and in the surrounding area there are some worthwhile nature spots like the Sierra de Costanazo and Sierra de Corija mountains and the Altos de los Campos de Gómara, a Special Protection Area for Birds.
The patron saint festivities in honour of San Andrés take place on 30 November and the Cruz de Mayo festival is held in early May.
