Villaseca de Arciel
Like in neighbouring municipalities, in Villaseca de Arciel, a number of sigillata pottery items, popular during Roman times, has been found. This could be evidence of the existence of a Roman settlement in these lands.
Some 35 kilometres from the city of Soria, Villaseca de Arciel is located in the Tierras de Ágreda area, where holm oak, mallow, thyme and gorse dominate and wild hare and quail abound. The Cañada Hermosa is an area with limestone formations and with flat, deforested ridges, forming part of the Special Protection Area for Birds called Altos Campos de Gómara, where bird lovers can observe steppe species.
The architectural highlight is the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, a Gothic style church, and a palace house in the heart of the village.
Although there are some herds of sheep, the economy here is based mainly on the cultivation of cereals and sunflower.
The local festivals in Villaseca are held every 20 May in honour of San Bernardino de Siena. Locals also celebrate the feast day of La Virgen de los Remedios on 17 June.
