Villaverde Peñahorada
Villaverde Peñahorada is a Minor Local Authority that depends administratively on the local council of Merindad de Río Ubierna.
It is located to the south of the gorge of the River Hoz and is made up of a main nucleus and three districts: En Medio, La Ventilla and La Mota. Its rugged landscapes have made this municipality one of the most popular destination in the province for rock climbing, with climbing enthusiasts able to enjoy a range of different levels and routes in these surroundings.
A quarry known as La Polar was carved out in the area around Villaverde Peñahorada in the mid-20th century. Although this industry had an important impact on the development of the area for decades, quarrying finally ceased only a few years ago after calls from the villagers themselves in light of the inconveniences that the quarrying generated for residents and for some houses in the municipality.
In terms of the heritage of this small town, the Romanesque church dedicated to Santiago Apóstol, St. James the Apostle, stands out, built in ashlar masonry, with a single nave and a cross plan with a tower at the foot of the nave. It is precisely in honour of this saint that the pilgrimage and patron saint festivities of this small town in Burgos are held every 25 July.
