La Molina de Ubierna
La Molina de Ubierna is a small town in Burgos with just over 30 inhabitants. It is located in the comarca of Alfoz and currently depends administratively on the municipality of Merindad de Río Ubierna, although in the past it was an independent municipality of its own. La Molina de Ubierna is located on a small rise in the terrain that affords privileged views of the rest of the surrounding area.
In terms of architecture, two religious buildings stand out, both in the late Romanesque style. The first of these is the Parish Church of San Román, built in the 13th century and restored by the villagers themselves in the year 2000, of which Santa Ana was said to be the patron saint. The second is the Church of San Salvador, which has a very sober interior decoration, not appearing as a parish church in 1587 with the title of San Salvador.
However, one of the main tourist attractions of this town has nothing to do with its heritage, but rather the local festivals. Apart from the festivals in honour of the patron, Nuestra Señora de la Virgen del Rosario, San Román and San Salvador, as well as the Cross of May and the Cross of September, when there is a striking representation of the Passion of Jesus Christ.
This original festival takes place during Holy Week, more specifically on Good Friday, when the local residents become actors. Throughout the day, different scenes take place all over the town, ending at the highest part of the village, next to the church. This striking festival attracts more and more visitors to La Molina de Ubierna who accompany the amateur actors along the route, for a real party atmosphere.
