Lences de Bureba
It is a hamlet that has belonged to the municipality of Poza de la Sal in Burgos since 1981, some four kilometres away.
The first historical reference to this town dates back to 1101 and the Monastery of San Salvador de Oña. This document refers to it as a village belonging to the Rojas family. It was one of the seven urban centres that made up the Merindad de Bureba, within the district of Bureba. The Count of Lences, Marqués de Mortara, had jurisdiction over this district, and he was in charge of appointing the town councillor for a closer control over this property. Following the fall of the Ancien Régime, the village received a constitutional local council within the judicial district of Briviesca, in the Castilla la Vieja region.
Its architectural heritage includes the Church of Santa Eugenia with a Romanesque style doorway, which opens onto five semicircular archivolts supported by jambs, and a traditional farmhouse featuring three heraldic coats of arms on its façades. There is also an attractive medieval bridge, which has a single span with a pointed arch and masonry construction, which for years serves as a key crossing point for the transhumance of livestock in the area, forming part of the Cañada Real livestock trail.
The viewpoint of La Bureba, at an altitude of about 500 metres, offers a panoramic view of the whole region of Bureba and its surrounding mountains. Also outstanding is the area known as Banks of the Homino, considered a Site of Community Interest. The river crosses several towns and during the summer, bathing is permitted at a small dam where the water remains stagnant. In the vicinity of the municipality it is also possible to visit the leisure area of Molino Río Castil, located in the vicinity of an old flour mill.
The most important festivals in Lences are the patron festivals in honour of Santa Eugenia, Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes and Nuestra Señora de Montes Claros, held in January, September and May, respectively.
