Peñahorada
Peñahorada is a Minor Local Entity that depends administratively on the Town Council of Merindad de Río Ubierna.
The village is located right at the exit of a gorge that coincides with the divide between the Atlantic basin of the River Hoz, a tributary of the Ubierna, and the Mediterranean basin, to which the River de la Molina, a tributary of the Homino, belongs. It all makes for an important environmental and scenic heritage in the area. Between 1785 and 1833 it formed part of the Jurisdiction of Río Ubierna in the District of Burgos, one of the 14 that made up the Intendency de Burgos - the forerunner of the current provincial authority. It became a municipality until 1857, when it was integrated as part of La Molina de Ubierna.
The Romanesque Church of San Esteban Protomártir, a rectangular building with a single nave and built in limestone masonry, stands out among the heritage preserved in this small town.
The rugged natural environment in which this municipality is located has made Peñahorada one of the best areas in Burgos for climbing. In fact, the small school in Peñahorada allows fans of this sport to enjoy a wide variety of climbing experiences in terms of difficulty and backdrop.
Peñahorada celebrates local festivals every August - as do the other 20 districts that make up the municipality of Merindad de Río Ubierna - the so-called Fiestas de la Merindad, which sees the people from all the different areas celebrate their union and solidarity with each other by waving their banners, as well as community meals and popular dances.
