Escaño
This well-kept village is located on the banks of the river Nela, flanked by the road and the current route of the Nature Trail of the old Santander-Mediterranean Sea railway.
The excellent church of San Salvador, which stands out from the rest of the buildings in Escaño, is considered one of the best examples of the Merindades Romanesque style due to its diversity of elements, its unity of style, its interplay of volumes and its contrasting shapes. Its recent restoration further enhances the façade and the belfry. A Latin inscription from the year 1121 and the rich iconographic decoration of the apse brackets focus the visitor's attention.
It is well worth strolling through the peaceful ensemble and discovering its fine architecture. There are also quite recreational, bathing and fishing areas in the vicinity.
The local festivities take place at the beginning of August and are organised by the Asociación Vecinos de Escaño (Escaño Neighbours Association). They last for three days. The first day opens with the popular chupinazo (fireworks), which gives way to different activities focused on the youngest, including games and snacks. The main event on the second day is the procession to the church which ends with a moving mass and a popular paella shared by all the local residents. During the afternoon there are various games championships such as tute, brisca or mus (card games) and also a popular pilgrimage before ending the day with a verbena (open-air popular dance). The third day of the festivities is used to award the prizes for the competitions held, share a hot chocolate and enjoy the chupinazo (fireworks) that closes the festivities.
