Quintanabaldo
Quintanabaldo is a town belonging to the Merindad de Valdeporres, whose municipal district is crossed by the course of the river Nela.
The first mention of this town is in the well-known Floridablanca Census of 1787. These documents indicate that it formed part of the Intendencia de Burgos (the historical antecedent of the current province of Burgos) between 1785 and 1833. Antonio María de Porres, one of the members of the illustrious Porres family, was the owner of this manor. Although it was originally included in the Junta de Puentedey, at the end of the 19th century it passed to the Merindad de Valdeporres.
According to another important publication, the 19th century Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar (Geographical-statistical-historical dictionary of Spain and its overseas possessions), the hamlet was located to the left of the river Nela, standing on a small hill. It had 13 homes and the parish church of La Asunción de Nuestra Señora, belonging to the parish of Pedrosa, all surrounded by forests of beech, holm oak and oak trees.
The town's most emblematic building is the parish church of La Asunción de Nuestra Señora. It is a fairly simple Romanesque style temple made of masonry that overlooks the river Nela from the heights. The most striking features are the bells located on the front façade of the church.
As for the local gastronomy, it is worth mentioning the lechazo (suckling lamb) as the star dish, as well as morcilla (black pudding) and Burgos cheese.
On 16 August, the town's festivities are held in honour of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora.
