Canal de los Ojos de San Jorge
On the outskirts of Albacete, we find the Canal de los Ojos de San Jorge, one of the branches built around the María Cristina canal. Until the second half of the 20th century, this area consisted of the old springs, springs, lagoons and wetlands.
For a long time, the waters that flowed from here served to supply the Castilian capital and its surroundings, but the drying up of a thousand-year-old spring located in this enclave, together with the growth of the population of Albacete, made it necessary to seek a supply from the waters of the Júcar river.
There is currently a Nature Trail on the branch of the Canal de los Ojos de San Jorge. Its route begins at the El Vivero watering place. It takes just over four kilometres to reach the source of the dried-up spring. On this branch, there is a link with the Baeza-Utiel railway line, which forms the connection with Albacete on the Don Quixote Route. Continuing upstream, you can cross crop fields and land where the canal has meanders and a multitude of secondary branches.
