Canal del Salobral
The Salobral canal is an infrastructure built in the 19th century around the María Cristina canal in Albacete. This construction forms part of the drainage network of the Los Llanos area, which also includes the Acequión, La Estacadilla and San Jorge canals.
The purpose of all of them was to prevent water stagnation in areas that were formerly lagoons. After the works were carried out, small settlements and intensive crops flourished in this area, and at the same time the health problems of Albacete were solved.
In recent years, the Salobral canal has undergone numerous interventions in order to reduce the amount of mud and thus increase the hydraulic capacity of the canal. There is now an ecological corridor around this infrastructure with a length of 5,935 metres. This natural path is adapted for bicycle traffic and pedestrian traffic in the area of Albacete, Aguas Nuevas, el Salobral and Santa Ana.
The course of the Salobral canal joins the rest of the canals at La Reunión, the starting point of the María Cristina canal, the most important of them all, which flows into the Cañahorro ravine, discharging its waters into the Júcar.
