Canal Acequion
When Albacete received a visit from King Charles IV in 1802, few imagined that he would be the architect of one of the largest hydraulic constructions in the area. After checking the state of the stagnant water around the city and seeing how it affected its inhabitants, he decreed the construction of a canal with which he intended to carry all this water to the river Júcar.
During the project, a series of branches were built in order to drain the stagnant waters in the Los Llanos area and solve the sanitation problems. One of them is the Estacadilla Canal. All these branches converge at La Reunión, the point where the María Cristina Canal begins.
The route that goes from the María Cristina canal to the Estacadilla canal has today become part of an environmental route that starts in the centre of Albacete and along which it is possible to discover a wide variety of flora and fauna.
