Segorbe
Segorbe serves as the capital of the comarca of Alto Palancia in Castellón. This town boasts a rich historical heritage. It is situated at an altitude of 394 metres, nestled between the Espadán and Calderona mountain ranges, and along the road connecting Aragón and Valencia. It currently has a population of more than 9,000 inhabitants.
Its strategic location, perched atop a mound with steep, vertical walls that enhance its defensibility, has made this site a place of occupation since prehistoric times. The earliest archaeological sites reveal remains from the Bronze Age, marking the first settlement, while traces from the Iberian period and Roman settlements have also been uncovered. Following the Moorish conquest, the area became a small rural town fortified with a castle. In 1245, it was captured by James I the Conqueror, becoming part of the Aragonese crown through an agreement with King Zeyt Abuzeyt. For many years, it served as a stately residence, leading to renovations of the castle, which were carried out to add new rooms. After the Middle Ages, it continued to play a significant role in the region and the Valencian Community as a whole, until its gradual decline began in the 19th century.
In terms of architecture, the most notable buildings include La Estrella Castle, the Prison Tower, located within the old city walls near the Portal de Teruel and dating back to the 16th century, the medieval walls, with the oldest remains dating from the 11th century, and La Verónica Arch.
In terms of its natural heritage, the municipality offers six routes that start from the town, providing the opportunity to fully immerse oneself in the surrounding landscapes, which contribute to its significant environmental richness. One of the most notable sites near the municipality is the spring and the area surrounding the Shrine of La Esperanza.
The municipality plays host to a diverse array of local festivals, including religious, cultural, and tourist celebrations. Notable events include the festivals of San Antonio Abad, the patron saint's day celebrations, and the medieval market, as well as various celebrations held in the districts surrounding Segorbe. There are also celebrations centred around the region's rich culinary culture as the Segorbe Ham and Artisan Sausage Fair.
