Ermita de San Francisco
The San Francisco hermitage is in the municipality of San Martín del Río, in the Jiloca district of Teruel.
It is a 17th century Baroque church which, according to the documentation found, was built by the French mason Francisco Sostre, in around 1669, under commission of the local priest of the time. The documents also refer to the existence of a house adjoining the hermitage.
It has a single nave in the shape of a Latin cross, divided into three bays, and covered with a barrel vault with lunettes and reinforced with buttresses. The interior notably includes the three chapels at the head of the church, especially the dome in the main chapel.
As for the exterior, the church was built in rendered masonry, and has an austere-looking façade, topped by a small belfry with a single bell, and covered with a gabled roof.
Near the hermitage there is a viewpoint, with a picnic area beside it, where you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the village, which notably features a Gothic-Renaissance style parish church of San Martín de Tours, which was built between the 16th and 18th centuries.
