Virgen del Buen Reposo hermitage
The Virgen del Buen Reposo hermitage is in the municipality of San Martín del Río, in the Jiloca district of Teruel.
It is a small church dedicated to the Virgen del Buen Reposo, and dates from the Baroque period, more specifically the 18th century. It has a single nave divided into four bays and covered with a half-barrel vault with lunettes, built in masonry, although the façade would later be rendered in cement.
The doorway is simple and austere, with a semicircular arch on pilasters, a central oculus and plaster mouldings. The building is crowned with a belfry in the shape of an arch, with a single bell.
Inside, the 13th century Romanesque medieval carving of the Virgen del Buen Reposo, stands out. And the noble coats of arms of Garatachea de Bernabé y Pérez, and of Domingo de Bernabé y Pérez de Corral, are on one of the private chapels, which in turn serves as a pantheon.
As regards the titular image of the hermitage, the Virgen del Buen Reposo, also known as the Virgen de la Leche, the Virgen de Belén or the Virgen nodriza (Nursing Virgin), it is an invocation whose iconography represents the Virgin Mary breastfeeding the Baby Jesus.
