Villagonzalo Arenas
Villagonzalo Arenas is a town belonging to the municipality of Burgos, from which it is separated by just over four kilometres, located in the comarca of Alfoz de Burgos. It is located in the valley of the River Ubierna, opposite Quintanadueñas and surrounded by the Villalonquéjar industrial park.
This district formed part of the Partido de Burgos, one of the fourteen that made up the Intendencia de Burgos (the historical antecedent of the current province of Burgos) in its category of “single villages”. Between 1785 and 1833, in the Floridablanca Census of 1787, considered to be the first Spanish population census created using modern statistical techniques, it had royal jurisdiction and was part of the city of Burgos.
In terms of heritage, there is the Church of San Pedro de Antioquía and a tower with a quadrangular base that is quite deteriorated, although part of the original four walls remain standing. The ground plan consists of a square measuring 9.45 m on each side. The walls are very thick, measuring 1.90 m, built of masonry with ashlar corners and filled with lime and stone. It also contains a segmental arch corresponding to the entrance door, which has practically collapsed.
The main activity of the local inhabitants of Villagonzalo Arenas is agriculture. In terms of local cuisine, as in almost all the villages in the area, the most popular dishes are suckling lamb, Burgos black pudding and “queso fresco” or unripened cheese. In February, the village celebrates the festivities of San Pedro.
