Rueda de Pisuerga
The town of Rueda de Pisuerga is located about 8 km from Cervera de Pisuerga, the municipality to which it belongs in the Montaña Palentina region.
Historically, in the El Otero area, there was a pre-Roman settlement that experts attribute to the Cantabrians. The signum equitum was found in this area. Close by, in the Vegallares area, some tombs were also found in which the trousseaus of blacksmiths and metal artisans were discovered.
Originally, the town was located on the banks of the river, although later the inhabitants of Rueda decided to move it towards the road.
The streets of this municipality are well worth a stroll, including Calle Rea, which leads to a beautiful tree-lined square. You should also visit the parish church of St. Christopher. The church has been modified a lot since it was built, but it clearly belongs to the Romanesque style, since it preserves the base of the nave and its original doorway. It has a single nave covered by a barrel vault reinforced by barrel arches, and a square chancel with a star-shaped ribbed vault with angel keystones and corner buttresses. Its doorway has a pointed arch and three archivolts on columns with capitals decorated with historical, plant motifs, and imaginary animals, and a continuous decorated crest.
Inside there are the capitals of the central barrel arch, decorated with acanthus leaves, the 17th century altarpiece, with a figure of St. Sebastian, the baptismal font, and the holy water font from the 18th century. The town's festivities in honour of St. Christopher are held every July 10.
