Ligüérzana
Just 5 km from the iconic Cervera de Pisuerga lies this town of ancient origins dating back to the 7th century.
Formerly, this town was known as Liguerzena, a pre-Romanesque word that, according to experts, means "place of flax", in clear allusion to the important flax crops that existed in the area until a few years ago.
Evidence of its antiquity is also provided by the remains found at the site of the Allende Cave, where early medieval human-shaped tombs have been found outside the cave.
As you stroll through its streets you see a group of ancestral homes still bearing their colourful coats of arms, including the council house, whose coat of arms dates back to the 18th century and depicts two indigenous musicians.
You can also visit the Gothic St. Andrew's church, which features an outstanding Herrerian belfry and a semicircular arched doorway. Inside, there is only one nave covered with starred ribbed vaults, baroque and neoclassical altarpieces, a renaissance baptismal font, and a baroque font for blessings.
Meanwhile, climbing enthusiasts can enjoy a popularly area known as Las Calares, which is the second largest and most important climbing area in Palencia. There is also the Quintanaluengos fishing preserve, one of the most famous in the province.
Ligüérzana holds its St. Andrew's festivities on November 31.
