Barcenilla de Pisuerga
The small town of Barcenilla de Pisuerga is located in the Montaña Palentina region in the municipality of Cervera de Pisuerga.
The Pisuerga River runs by the waters the town, which is divided into two neighbourhoods, the Barrio del Río and the Barrio de Abajo. The river has always played an essential role in the life of the town, which is home to a small hydropower plant (currently abandoned), and a refuge for fishermen who fished in its waters.
The well-known La Robla railroad used to pass through here, and a bridge was built so that it could cross the river.
In terms of historical sights, the 16th century church of Our Lady of the Assumption is worth visiting. It has a 18th century main altarpiece, which depicts St. Joseph with the child and a hexagonal Romanesque baptismal font, decorated with a small border of diamond points on its upper part. However, one of the most striking features is undoubtedly its high bell tower, which signals the proximity of the village from several kilometres away.
Barcenilla's economy is based mainly on agriculture and livestock for personal consumption, although typical products such as pacharán (sloe-flavoured liqueur), honey, tea, and sausages are also produced on a small scale.
The festivity of Our Lady is celebrated on August 15, with a mass and procession of the images of the Virgin and St. Roque, with an afternoon of games, including "water war", barbecue and an evening party, and on August 16, a mass is celebrated for St. Roque.
