Terradillos
Terradillos is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the region of Tierra de Alba. It is made up of the villages of La Alcubilla, El Barrero, La Maza, Los Perales and Los Ventorros, as well as the residential complexes of El Encinar, Los Cisnes and Alba Nova.
The first mention of Terradillos appears in a document written by Alfonso IX, King of Leon, in 1224. Although there is no evidence of settlements prior to the establishment of the town, it is believed that it may have been inhabited before, as suggested by the presence of the Dolmen de las Piedras Hitas from the Neolithic period found in the Túmulo de Terradillos. In the municipality, there are also preserved remains of a Roman fountain, a road and a bridge of the Vía de la Plata (Silver Way).
Although the economy of this town is based mainly on agriculture, most locals commute to larger cities to work.
Strolling through the streets, visitors will find unique heritage and ethnographic sites, such as the Corral de Concejo, a place formerly used to keep cattle, horses, mules and other animals. There is still a cattle crush that was used to shoe the cattle and treat their wounds and illnesses.
Visitors can also go to the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which boasts a Mudejar wooden coffered ceiling, and until well into the 20th century, housed 14 Renaissance panel paintings from the 16th century by the Master of Terradillos. They were eventually sent to various museums in Salamanca, but the town hall keeps reproductions in its archives.
The town celebrates the festivity of the Conversion of St. Paul on January 25, the festivity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15 and the festivity of Nuestra Señora de la Encina on September 4.
