Santa Marta de Tormes
Just 3 km from Salamanca is the municipality of Santa Marta de Tormes. Due to its proximity to the capital and its numerous nearby residential complexes, in recent years this town has become the most populous in the metropolitan area, surpassed only by the city of Salamanca.
Thanks to various remains found in the area, we now know that there have been human settlements in this area since the Palaeolithic era. However, the official founding of Santa Marta dates back to the Middle Ages as a result of the resettlements carried out by the Kings of Leon. The first documentary reference found about the town dates from 1201, in a document of land purchase made by Archpriest Pedro Lucio in 1201.
In this town, we can find a number of museums, several buildings with murals and the church of Santa Marta, whose construction began in Romanesque style in the 12th century and was completed in modernist style. Its Romanesque semi-circular arch doorway and interior arch, the Baroque belfry and the Mudejar coffered ceiling are still preserved.
Particularly noteworthy is the nature and leisure park "Isla del Soto" on the Tormes River, where visitors can enjoy nature, play outdoor sports, and go for walks and bike rides.
This town hosts the International Festival of Saltimbanquis, Volatineros and Genios sin botella, Volatiritormes, and the festivities of San Blas on February 3 and Santa Marta on July 29.
