Calvarrasa de Arriba
Calvarrasa de Arriba is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, located in the region of Campo de Salamanca (Campo Charro).
It was founded in the Middle Ages by the Kings of Leon, who originally named it as Calvarrasa de Genescal, a name formed by the words Calva (bald spot, area without vegetation) and Rasa (high and clear plain). Apparently, the name comes from its geographical situation, in the high plateaus located in the surroundings of the town.
In the surroundings of the town, numerous remains proving the existence of previous settlements, especially in the area of the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Peña, where the remains of an old bullring and a fountain dating from the first century can be visited.
According to a slate slab on the town hall, it was built by order of King Carlos III, and the building was used as a jail and to store bread for many years.
The church of San Pedro Apóstol is located in the Plaza Mayor. It is composed of a single nave, built with rubble masonry and ashlar masonry in the corners and the belfry. The festivities in honour of the patron saint of the town are celebrated on June 29.
In the Teso de la Peña, there is a baroque chapel in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Peña whose festivities are celebrated with a procession on the Monday following Pentecost Sunday.
