Arapiles
The municipality of Arapiles is located in the region of Campo de Salamanca (Campo Charro), in the province of Salamanca. Founded by the Kings of Leon in the Middle Ages, it is made up of different villages such as El Ventorro, La Pinilla, Las Torres and Orejudos.
Without a doubt, this place is known worldwide because this is where one of the most important battles of the Peninsular War was fought, the Battle of Arapiles.
In 1812, the streets and surroundings of this village became the scene of an important battle during the Napoleonic wars and whose outcome had a huge impact for both sides.
The hills of Arapil Chico and Arapil Grande were used as artillery and lookout posts by the allied army, formed by the English, Portuguese and Spanish, and commanded by General Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington, and the French troops, led by Marshal Marmont, respectively.
Today, in Arapil Grande there is a viewpoint of the battlefield, an area declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Historic Site, and the Monument to the Battle of Los Arapiles and the Fallen in the Peninsular War. Visitors can find more information in the Arapiles Battle Interpretation Hall in the village.
While strolling through its small streets, visitors will find the parish church of San Fabián and San Sebastián, which has a beautiful main chapel with Mozarabic details.
Arapiles celebrates its patron saint festivities in honour of San Sebastian from January 19 to 21 and the village of Las Torres from December 8 to 10 in honour of Santa Eulalia.
