Cassà de la Selva
This municipality is located 12 km from Girona and pertains to the region of Girona. Perhaps its ideal location on a hill looking down upon a wide plain, and its good communication with both the city of Girona and the coast, increased the attractiveness of this territory in which remains have been found from different historical periods such as Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, Iberian and Roman.
Despite this, it would not be until the Middle Ages that any real population growth occurred, with the construction of the urban centre around the Romanesque temple, where there is fertile land close to the massif of Les Gavarres.
The old town is where its main architectural sights such as the parish church of Sant Martí are housed. Although there are some Renaissance elements, it is in fact a Gothic church from the 16th century. It has some features of great value, such as some Modernist and Noucentisme memorials located in the cemetery, or an extraordinary set of ceramics belonging to the 15th and 16th centuries housed behind the choir.
In addition, the village preserves the old train station, which has been restored and is currently used as an exhibition hall. It is an example of the expansion of the railway that occurred in the 19th century, thanks to which various diverse industries flourished in the metallurgical, textile, food, graphic arts and electrical materials sectors, among others. This allowed the population and economy of the municipality to expand even more.
Currently, the economy is based on the service sector as well as on the industrial and agricultural sectors.
In addition, nature lovers can take in the typical Mediterranean landscape in which some unique trees have been preserved, such as the Pi Gros de Vilabella.
Regarding the festivities, in May the Fira del tap i el suro, in June the Festa Major, in September Santa Tecla, and in November the Festival Càntut are all celebrated.
