Palol d'Onyar
Palol D'Onyar is a small town in the municipality of Quart, in the province of Girona. There is evidence that the town was originally founded by the Romans, and its name comes from an ancient road that linked the Roman Valentía with the centre of the peninsula. Accordingly, the Quart-Quntum could refer to a milestone that showed the distance of four Roman miles from that point and was found in the Plaza Valdecabres.
Palol's most outstanding treasure is its castle, a work declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). The first references to this building date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1350, Sibila, daughter of Dalmau de Palol, became the owner of the castle. In the 15th century, it was still owned by the de Palol family. Subsequently it became a parish, with the lord retaining rights over the chapel.
Despite having undergone several modifications, the building maintains the structure of the castle. It has a voussoir doorway that is accessed through the old bailey and communicates with the dwellings and the chapel. The walls are fortified featuring several loopholes, while the walls are plastered and said openings are framed in stone.
It should be noted that this building is attached to the church of Sant Sadurni de Quart, a Renaissance structure that used to be the castle’s chapel. When it became a parish church, a new entrance was built in the eastern wall.
