Municipality
Llambilles
In the southern part of the Girona region, almost on the border with Baix Empordà, we find the municipality of Llambilles.
All the evidence seems to point to the pre-Roman origin of this settlement. Its name appears for the first time mentioned in the year 892 in the form Lambiliolas, a word that would evolve over the centuries from Lambillis to Lembiles, until it became the current form of Llambilles.
The municipality has been populated since ancient times, as the archaeological finds found by Dr. Oliva Prat evidence the existence of two military settlements in the mountains of Aulet and Caselles that were inhabited until the 2nd century BC. There is no clear evidence of the existence of Roman military settlements in these mountains.
Throughout the 18th century, Llambilles lived through a period of prosperity with the resurgence of agriculture, as well as the export of raw material extracted from the forests, mainly for the cork industry.
The municipality is home to several buildings of significant architectural heritage, among which stands out the parish church dedicated to Sant Cristòfol. Built in 1082, it is of Romanesque origin with a Gothic floor plan. Another treasure of the town is the Capella de la Mare de Déu de la Pietat in Erols, a chapel in honour of Our Lady of Pity whose origins date back to the 12th century. Additionally, there is quite a unique labyrinth known as the Roca de las 30 Creus, which is composed of medium-sized rocks into which crossed have been carved.
In terms of the economy, the pottery industry has also had an impact on the municipality, although over the years, it has suffered a decline. For its part, the agricultural tradition has endured, and new industries have cropped up. In addition to the development of two new residential areas, the service sector has also experienced an upsurge.
The celebrations of the main festival are held in July with numerous activities such as water slides, open-air dances, traditional food, live concerts, and the exhibition of classic cars.
