Quart
The municipality of Quart is located 7 km from Girona, in the southeastern part of the Gironés region. The village occupies a small area of the Selva plain between Girona and Fornells de la Selva, near the valley of the Celrè River and its tributaries.
Beyond the small village centre with its architectural heritage and the modern housing estates is the village of Palol d’Onyar, featuring the church of Sant Saturnino. Continuing further north we find the neighbourhood of La Creueta, and hamlets such as Castellar de la Selva, where the church of Sant Martin, Montnegre and Sant Mateu de Montnegre are located.
Due to the region’s clay soil, the flourishing of potteries was favoured, which in turn became part of the cultural identity. In addition, the economy was also based on two other activities: forestry and agriculture, with plantations dedicated to the production of cork. All such industries benefited further from the proximity of Girona and its industrial, logistical and service sectors.
It is worth visiting the pottery museum where further explanations of the properties of the clay soil and its great importance to region can be found.
The main local festivities are celebrated in each of the surrounding villages of Quart, between July and August; the Fiesta del Roser (in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary), in mid-April, and the Catalan Pottery Market Fair in mid-May.
