Túnel de la Rasa
At kilometre point 312.5, the traveller will cross the last of the six tunnels that make up this stage.
This is La Rasa tunnel, a 69 m long infrastructure with no electric lighting. It served the Santander-Mediterranean Sea line, planned to link the ports of Santander and Valencia. This railway was in operation for more than fifty years, from Cidad-Dosante in Burgos to Calatayud, where it connected with the Ferrocarril Central de Aragón (Aragon Central Railway).
Originating in the late 19th century, the project did not materialise until 1920, when it was taken over by the State Government. Although the line opened between 1927 and 1930, the connection with Santander never took place, despite the construction of the La Engaña tunnel that crossed the Cantabrian mountain range. The line underwent shut downs and abandonment, and finally closed in 1985.
Fifteen tunnels were built along the route, excluding the underground section at the entrance to Soria on the Calatayud side.
