Viaduct
The Santander-Mediterranean Sea railway line provided its service for more than fifty years. Although it was originally conceived to link the ports of Santander and Valencia, this purpose was never fulfilled. This project, conceived at the end of the 19th century, was launched between 1927 and 1930 and was to be shut down and abandoned until its definitive closure in 1985.
This railway line had to overcome numerous obstacles along its route, which is why it was necessary to build numerous tunnels as well as bridges and viaducts during the construction works.
This is the viaduct over the river Trueba. It is 42 m long, and its aim was to help the train to overcome the course of this river which starts in the Estacas de Trueba pass and which, in its 48 km of route, crosses the towns of Espinosa de los Monteros and Medina de Pomar before pouring its waters into the river Nela.
This is one of the numerous infrastructures rehabilitated and put into service for the enjoyment of the users of this Nature Trail, mainly hikers and cyclists. In addition to the restoration of the original structure, new metal railings and a wooden deck have been installed as flooring, thus adapting the bridge to its new purpose.
