Old Nofuentes station
The Santander-Mediterranean Sea line was a project conceived with the aim of connecting the ports of Santander and Valencia, but it was never completed.
Initially conceived at the end of the 19th century to reduce rail fares in the Cantabrian ports, work began in 1924 after obtaining the corresponding permits from the Government. The line was opened to the public between 1927 and 1930, but the connection to Santander was delayed until 1959 with the construction of the La Engaña tunnel. This tunnel, 7 km long, was finally completed in 1959 after numerous setbacks and the connection with the Cantabrian capital was never completed.
However, the budgetary constraints imposed by the 1959 Stabilisation Plan led to the works being halted and finally abandoned in 1962. From then on, the line fell into a progressive state of deterioration until its closure in 1985. During its operation, the line transported a variety of goods, including coal, sand, wood, citrus fruits, cereals, potatoes, fertilisers, livestock and building materials, using a fleet of steam locomotives and domestically manufactured wagons.
The Nofuentes station was located at kilometre point 326.7 of this railway. The complex was built by the Compañía del Ferrocarril Santander-Mediterráneo to serve the town of the same name. It would become operational at the end of 1930 with the commissioning of the service between Trespaderme and Cidad. Nofuentes station, like most of the stations of this railway, had a building for passenger services and a warehouse for goods. The main building consisted of two storeys and a gabled roof. It had as many as three service tracks.
In 2013, ADIF sold the building, and it is currently used as a private home.
