Los Llanos Tunnel
The Los Llanos tunnel, 84 m long, is the next infrastructure that the traveller will come across during this stage.
At the exit, on the left side of the track, there is a small building that used to be the guard's house, on which there is an inscription that shows the kilometre of the Santander-Mediterranean Sea railway line where it is located, specifically 313+083.
It is currently in a semi-derelict state and completely abandoned. Despite this, two storeys and a gabled roof can be distinguished. It is an element of important historical and industrial value that reflects not only an era, but also the importance of this railway whose raison d'être was to link the ports of Santander and Valencia. It was in operation for more than fifty years, from Cidad-Dosante in Burgos to Calatayud, where it linked up with the Ferrocarril Central de Aragón (Aragon Central Railway).
Originating in the late 19th century, the project did not materialise until 1920, when it was taken over by the State Government. Although the line opened between 1927 and 1930, the connection with Santander never took place, despite the construction of the La Engaña tunnel that crossed the Cantabrian mountain range. The line underwent shut downs and abandonment, and finally closed in 1985.
Fifteen tunnels were built along the route, excluding the underground section at the entrance to Soria on the Calatayud side.
