Old Trespaderne Station
In November 1930, the Trespaderne-Cidad section of the Santander-Mediterranean Sea railway line came into service. This Iberian gauge railway line was 367 km long and its construction was undertaken in different sections. The line eventually had thirty-two stations, sixteen sidings and nine halts.
Its construction was intended to link the ports of Santander and Valencia, but the project was never completed, despite which it remained in service for more than 50 years. Several tunnels, numerous bridges and various stations were built on this section.
One of these stations was the one serving the municipality of Trespaderne, located at kilometre point 321.555. It began its journey at the same time as the opening of the section in 1930. The main building consisted of two storeys and served the passengers. It also had a warehouse for goods and several service tracks.
In 1941, with the nationalisation of all the Iberian gauge railway lines, the facilities were taken over by RENFE. In 1981, the facilities were downgraded and reclassified as a halt, eliminating the passing track. Finally, the station ceased to provide service when the Santander-Mediterranean Sea line was closed to traffic on 1 January 1985. Today, the passenger building has been restored and turned into a hostel, while the warehouse serves as a geological interpretation centre for the gorge that crosses the line in the direction of Oña. In addition, the Torre de la Aguada is still preserved.
