Dehesa de Montejo
Dehesa de Montejo is the capital of a municipality that also includes the towns of Colmenares de Ojeda, La Estación, and Vado.
The origin of its name comes from the Latin word defensa, which refers to the amount of pasture land in the area. In addition, Montejo would come from an uninhabited village located on a hill where you can still find tiles on top of it.
Next to the cemetery stands the church of St. Pelayo with 12th century Romanesque remains on its facade. The church was subsequently expanded between the 15th and 17th centuries. Inside is a baroque baptismal font from the 16th century and altarpieces, paintings, and sculptures from the 17th century.
The inhabitants of Dehesa de Montejo work mainly in agriculture, cattle raising, and mining.
Nearby is the Protected Natural Area Tejada de Tosande, where visitors can enjoy the ancient yew trees of the Sierra de la Peña.
Its patron saint festivities are celebrated on May 15 and June 26 for St. Isidoro and St. Pelayo, respectively.
