Barrio de Santa María
The town of Barrio de Santa María is located in the Montaña Palentina at the end of the Aguilar de Campoo reservoir.
The first references to this place date back to the 11th century when it is mentioned in some documents as "La Serna de Santa María" dependent on the Monastery of Santa María la Real of Aguilar de Campoo.
Right in the centre of town there are the remains of its medieval past in the Assumption of the Virgin Church, which dates back to the 12th century and is a Historical and Artistic Monument that was renovated in the 16th century. There are also several 17th century manor houses in the town, as well as towers with family coats of arms and the well-known House of the Chaplaincy. The facade of the old rectory house dates back to the 18th century.
Nearby is the Romanesque St. Eulalia chapel, the old parish church of the uninhabited area bearing the same name. This chapel is also listed as a Historical and Artistic Monument and inside you there are the remains of mural paintings from the 13th century.
The townspeople celebrate the festivities of St. Eulalia on February 12 and Our Lady of the Assumption on August 15.
